The last surviving original member of the Ramones – the punk band that helped define the genre – has died aged 62.
Tommy Ramone died on Friday at home in Queens, New York, the band announced. He had reportedly been receiving treatment for cancer.
“We are saddened to announce the passing of Tommy Ramone (née Erdelyi), the original drummer for the Ramones, earlier today, 11 July 2014,” said statement posted on Facebook.
Tommy was born in Budapest in 1949 and emigrated with his family to New York in 1957.
The band, founded in New York in 1974, had a major influence on punk rock. The original members were Tommy, singer Jeffrey Hyman (Joey Ramone) and bassist Douglas Colvin (Dee Dee Ramone).
