It’s a good time to be a rock fan in South America. That’s because Guns N’ Roses are currently making their way through several cities with the help of a very special guest — bassist Duff McKagan. The returning Guns N’ Roses musician is filling in for the band’s regular bassist Tommy Stinson while he fulfills touring obligations with his other group, The Replacements.
McKagan played the first of five nights on the South American tour last night (April 6) in Buenos Aires and by the looks of things it was one hell of a show. The band opened their set with the title track from the ‘Chinese Democracy’ album before venturing into McKagan’s familiar territory with ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ and ‘It’s So Easy.’ Early on in the set, the bassist got a chance to shine by taking lead vocals on back-to-back covers of Misfits‘ ‘Attitude’ and The Stooges‘ ‘Raw Power.’
Other highlights in the set included the Richard Fortus guitar solo which led into ‘Live and Let Die,’ Dizzy Reed’s piano solo on ‘Catcher in the Rye,’ DJ Ashba getting a turn in the spotlight for ‘La Bella Vita / Sweet Child O’ Mine’ and the Bumblefoot-led ’Abnormal.’ The evening also included a jam-heavy encore that featured the songs ‘Patience,’ ‘a cover of The Who‘s The Seeker’ and ‘Paradise City.’
McKagan will continue with Guns N’ Roses through April 17. Remaining stops on the trek include Asuncion, Paraguay; La Paz, Bolivia; Recife, Brazil; and Fortalez, Brazil. Stinson, who actually performed with Guns N’ Roses for a few South American shows before exiting the trek, will return to the band on May 13 in Bethlehem, Pa. Though he’s made prior cameo appearances, the Buenos Aires show marks McKagan’s first full performance with the band in 17 years. See the set list and a fan shot video of McKagan performing ‘Attitude’ below.
