Two festival fans have been killed and several seriously injured after a driver drove his car into a concert queue then fled the scene.
The hit-and-run took place outside a venue in Austin, Texas which was taking part in the annual South By Southwest music event.
Austin Police have confirmed the unidentified driver has been arrested. They report: “23 individuals have been transported to hospital. Of those, five are in critical condition, two deceased.”
Eyewitnesses say fans were waiting to enter the Mohawk venue to see Tyler, The Creator perform. Complex associate editor Insanul Ahmed describes the vehicle as knocking people down “like popping popcorn”.
Black Star Riders frontman Ricky Warwick has revealed his wife was in the queue when the incident took place. He says: “Counting my blessings this morning as Tina was caught up in the carnage of the drunk-driver arsehole. Tina is okay, but very shook up. Cherish the ones you love, people.”
A Police spokesman has confirmed the suspect was already being chased by officers after being stopped for driving while impaired some moments previously. He had also hit two other vehicles before crashing the car and running off. He was tasered before being taken into custody.
The names of the deceased will not be released until family have been notified.
