Motley Crue guitarist Mick Mars has emphasised that the band’s upcoming retirement has nothing to do with his illness.
Earlier this week the band confirmed they’d split up after a final world tour, and signed a legally binding document preventing them from ever hitting the road again after 2015.
Even some Crue members had suggested part of the reason for the split was Mars’s ankylosing spondylitis, which causes distortion of the spine as the vertebrae fuse together.
But the guitarist tells Artisan News: “I mostly get the health reason thing. It’s a form of arthritis – it doesn’t stop me from touring. I’m going to be touring a long time after Motley Crue.”
And he argues there’s a positive side to suffering from AS: “You can see what I have. I feel lucky about that, because a lot of people have heart disease and other stuff like that, and they don’t even know it. They keel over on stage or whatever. That would be scary to me.”
Mars admits: “It is a bit of an inconvenience; sometimes it’s rougher than other times. But my health is perfect.”
Crue will commence their Final Tour later this year, with Alice Cooper opening the US shows. They’ll reach the UK and Europe next year. In the meantime they’re continuing work on the film version of their celebrated biography The Dirt.
