Dave Grohl admits he came up with the idea for Soundgarden video By Crooked Steps without being asked – then coerced the band into agreeing to make it.
The light-hearted promo, available below, sees Chris Cornell and co playing the role of a biker gang, except they’re on Segways rather than motorcycles.
And while Grohl accepts the grunge icons aren’t known for their “wicked sense of humour” he explains: “They’re really fucking funny people, super-dry and hilarious.”
He tells Fuse: “I was on vacation and they sent me their new record. I was such a huge fan, way before I moved to Seattle. The third song is called By Crooked Steps and it’s such an awesome Soundgarden song. Instantly recognisable.
“What happened – and this is how some of our Foo Fighters videos happened too – I just make up a video in my head as I’m listening to the song.
“I didn’t know if it was going to be a single or if they wanted to make a video or what. I called my manager and said, ‘I think I’ve got an idea for a Soundgarden video.’
“‘Okay… did they ask you to do that?’
“‘No, but…’”
Grohl wrote down his concept and sent it to drummer Matt Cameron. “He said, ‘Yeah, that’s kinda cool – I don’t really know if we’re going to make a video.’ And so we kinda made them make the video.”
Soundgarden released comeback album King Animal last year to positive reviews. Meanwhile, Grohl has been touring with his supergroup The Sound City Players, a band assembled to record the soundtrack to his documentary movie Sound City, telling the story of the celebrated California studio.
