Kurt Cobain’s widow Courtney Love has slated the collaboration between Paul McCartney and the surviving members of Nirvana during the 12-12-12 Superstorm Sandy charity show.
The ex-Beatle jammed a new track called Cut Me Some Slack, written by drummer Dave Grohl for his upcoming documentary movie Sound City. Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and touring guitarist Pat Smear also performed, making it the first time since Cobain’s death they’d played together.
Ahead of the show Love told TMZ she didn’t like the idea of McCartney fronting the band and wished it could have been John Lennon, saying: “Look, if John were alive it would be cool.”
On a Seattle author’s Facebook page she insisted she was a Macca fan, and wrote: “Paul better get earmuffs for the bass playing is all. With Krist’s bass playing? Let’s be clear, he’s not exactly known for brilliance.” She added: “If they don’t do songs they didn’t write – Nirvana songs they don’t own – I don’t care.”
After the charity show she said: “I was there. It was, uh it was bad.”
The Hole frontwoman went on to suggest she disapproved of other bands continuing without their original singer. She said she’d been invited to tour by Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains, reconstituted with new vocalist William DuVall after the death of Layne Staley.
“No disrespect to Jerry, as he’s an absolute gent. But wasn’t that – I mean, isn’t Layne dead?” she commented. “Sorry, I had to pass. Maybe I’m old or pure or some shit, but wow.”
Meanwhile, organisers of the 12-12-12 concert are auctioning the drumsticks Grohl used during his set, with a current price of $2750.
