Former Rainbow and Dio bassist Jimmy Bain has been arrested after causing a car accident then failing a sobriety test.
Police found him in possession of Vicodin pills without a valid prescription. He’s been charged with driving under the influence of drugs and released on $60,000 bail.
Bain, 64, also had an outstanding felony warrant for drugs charges, which was taken into account during his arrest. He’s due in Los Angeles Country Superior Court on September 19.
The bassist was turning left out of an electronics store car park on Tuesday night. He pulled out in front of another car, causing a collision.
Sgt Darin Ryburn of California Police Department tells the Burbank Leader that officers conducted a field sobriety test but Bain “failed to satisfactorily pass it.” After finding the pills and discovering the outstanding warrant, officers arrested him on suspicion of DUI, possessing narcotics and failing to answer the previous charge.
He was last arrested in 2005 on a similar DUI charge.
Scots-born Bain joined Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow in 1975 before being sacked two years later. He played with ex Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson in Wild Horses then joined former Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio in 1983, leaving in 1989 then returning a decade later. He left for good in 2005.
He founded the Hear’n Aid anti-hunger charity and co-wrote the charity track Stars, described as “the heavy rock answer to We Are The World.”
Bain has stubbled with addiction issues for many years. Blabbermouth cites an interview believed to have taken place in 2003 in which he said: “When you’re taking drugs you are spiritually bankrupt. You’re like the walking dead. You’re not committed to anything accept getting high. I’ve recorded over 60 albums and only made two clean.”
