Steven Tyler has quit TV gameshow American Idol in order to concentrate on Aerosmith – and he admits he strayed from his “first love” band.
The singer angered bandmates in 2010 after they’d come close to breaking up then pulled themselves back from the brink, only for him to reveal he was going to split his time between performing music and being a talent show judge.
But as the band prepare to release new album Music From Another Dimension, their first since 2004′s Honkin’ on Bobo, Tyler compares his TV career to a love affair.
He says: “After some long hard thoughts I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress, American Idol, before she boils my rabbit. I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back – but instead of begging on my hands and knees I got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open.
“The next few years are going to be dedicated to kicking some serious ass – the ultimate auditory takeover. In November we are unleashing our new album on the Earth, moon, Mars and way beyond the stars.
“Idol was over-the-top fun and I loved every minute of it. Now it’s time to bring rock back.”
Meanwhile, the mother of Tyler’s daughter Liv has spoken out over claims in a new book that she took part in orgies with Mick Jagger and David Bowie.
Author Christopher Andersen repeats old claims that the two singers had a homosexual relationship in Mick: The Wild Life and Mad Genius of Jagger, telling how Bowie’s then wife Angie found them in bed together and wished she’d been invited to join them.
But Bebe Buell, who had a brief fling with Tyler that resulted in the birth of Liv, is furious that Andersen quotes her saying: “I used to get some pretty strange phone calls from Mick and David at three in the morning, inviting me to join them in bed with four black women or four black men.”
She responds: “This entire thing is completely stupid and false. Who cares what they did in their private time? I don’t like getting dragged into the press when I wasn’t part of it. I don’t do orgies. Never did.
“Yes, I dated both men but not at the same time. Bowie was more of just a friend. Jagger was a boyfriend on and off for years. I hate having to answer to all of this crap. I am not anyone’s sex toy.”
