ZZ Top‘s Billy Gibbons has revealed the two secret weapons in his sound arsenal: a bag of outdated Mexican peso coins and a racing car windshield. The items are used to make custom picks to match his playing style. Gibbons explains: “They don’t make those large-sized peso coins anymore, but we got lucky and found a sackful. We found a machinist who was set up to bevel them down to playable picks. We kind of jump between peso and a plectrum made by Jim Dunlop, made from a plastic-like substance that was intended for racing car windows. He stumbled upon this substance, and it was perfect for picks.” [MusicRadar]
